FAQ

Q. How do I pronounce Açaí?

Açaí comes from the Tupian word iwasa’i, which means ‘fruit that expels or cries out for water’. Tupi is a group of 70 languages spoken by indigenous South Americans. When the Portuguese arrived in Brazil centuries ago, they had trouble saying iwasa’i, so they renamed the exotic purple berry açaí – pronounced ah-sigh-ee.

Q. What does Açaí taste like?

People who have experienced the taste of fresh wild açaí berries have likened the flavour to a cross between blueberries and dark chocolate. It’s slightly tart and not quite as sweet as other berries. It’s a remarkably rich, full-bodied flavour befitting of its deep purple colouring. Because our Açaí berries are snap frozen soon after picking, Amazonia Açaí still retains the vibrant taste of the fresh fruit. It’s delicious on its own, or can be used in all kinds of healthy and creative recipes.

Q. How do I use Amazonia Açaí powder and what is the recommended daily intake?

Amazonia recommends a minimum of 3 grams (one heaped teaspoon) of Dried Açaí Powder each day. You can consume much larger quantities of the berry safely, it’s completely up to you. One 3 gram serve gives you the antioxidants of a punnet and a half of blueberries (Laboratory ORAC analysis).

Add it to your daily juice, protein shake, yoghurt, water, over porridge or eat it straight. It tastes great! Our favourite recipe is two heaped tablespoons of Amazonia Açaí added to mango juice.

Q. Can children enjoy Amazonia Açaí?

Of course! Amazonia Dried Açaí is simply a berry, a delicious, natural fruit. Amazonia Acai contains no stimulants and nothing artificial. Packed with vitamins and antioxidants, Açaí is extremely beneficial to growing bodies. We recommend mixing Amazonia Açaí with fruit juice for a delicious and nutritious cooler that kids will love.

Q. Can I take Amazonia Acai with medicine?

Amazonia Dried Açaí is purely fruit, high in Antioxidants and your essential oils. There is no reason we are aware of that this should affect your medication, however if you have any concerns or you have strict dietary requirements, consult your doctor before taking açaí. If you are allowed to eat fruit or intake other antioxidant rich foods on medication you should be fine to take Amazonia Açaí.

If you have an allergy to berries, you should avoid açai.

Q. Is it safe to eat Acai during pregnancy?

Absolutely. Açai has no adverse effect on pregnancy and pregnant women.

Q. What is the drying process Amazonia use?

Amazonia Açai sources direct from the Amazon. Our freezing facility in the Amazon is just a short distance from where our lovely purple berries are picked. This enables us to guarantee our dried Açai is of the highest quality, snap frozen as soon as possible after harvesting - in most cases within a few hours of being picked. The reason we freeze the Açai berries is because they are very rich in oils and antioxidants. Açaí goes rancid within 24 hours after harvest, so Açaiberries must be frozen as soon as possible to preserve their nutrients, antioxidants and their natural flavour. We then free dry them using a vacuum system in which all the berries are dried at approximately minus 40 degrees Celsius. This means the berries are never heated during the drying process, potentially destroying nutrients.

Q. Why can't I find Açaí in its whole berry form (like goji berries)?

Açaí has a huge seed and only a small amount of fleshy skin and pulp. Therefore, when you consume Amazonia Açaí you are mainly consuming the skin of the Açaí berry. The skin of the fruit is much more nutrient dense then pulp. Açaí also needs to de-pulped and frozen shortly after harvest. So, outside of the Amazon region, it’s impossible to get the Açaí in its berry form. All Amazonia Açaí however is still in its whole food form, however it is crushed during the de-pulping and freezing.

Q. Is Amazonia Açaí an Australian company?

We are 100% Australian owned and operated, with a presence in the Macapa region of the Brazilian Amazon.

Q. Is Açaí good for weight loss?

We have been getting a lot of positive feedback in relation to this, and the Oprah show famously featured Açaí for its weight loss benefits.

Açaí is rich in Omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids. These are your polyunsaturated fats, known as ‘good fats’, which are known to lower cholesterol. Clinical research has been increasingly proving that omega-rich foods can also help prevent heart disease as well as other health conditions including depression and arthritis.

The essential fatty acids, amino acids, fibre and phytosterols found in açaí are important in increasing your metabolism, enhancing digestion and reducing appetite. Of course, weight loss is still highly dependent on the rest of your lifestyle and eating habits. Dried açaí makes an extremely beneficial contribution to a healthy, balanced diet.

Q. Why does my Dried Acai vary in density and colour?

All Amazonia Açaí is wild harvested. This means our açaí is derived from naturally occurring açaí palms that flourish in their natural environment within the Amazon rainforest. Because the berries are not propagated there will always be slight variance in colour and density. By choosing Amazonia Açaí you know you are getting organic berries that have grown naturally in the Amazon’s nutrient rich soil.
